It is well known to classify acoustic signals using a speech recogniser. Typically the speech recogniser performs its classification based on each sound element in the acoustic signal that the recogniser is capable of recognising. Acoustic signals are broken down into a series of sound elements, for example, individual letters, syllables or phonemes, each of which has a characteristic set of parameters, for example energy (power), pitch and duration (or time). The recogniser treats each sound element as if it is a separate word or phrase and attempts to recognise and match it to a set of words or phrases. In the case of continuous speech, it is known to recognise and classify sound elements by considering them in groups, or xe2x80x9cfragmentsxe2x80x9d, typically for the purpose of non-speech signal segmentation. Increasingly, speech recognisers are not recognising individual sound elements, but are recognising entire words or phrases. Such recognisers are referred to as xe2x80x9cmatch-to-speechxe2x80x9d recognisers, and generally incorporate a database of possible words or phrases in which an input sound element is most likely to be found. Systems that classify speech using the N-gram principle are also known. The N-gram principle consists of recognising the complete input signal (e.g. a word) as a set of N-grams. For example, a complete phone, typically a spoken or printed word, may be recognised as a combination of N=2 syllables; each of the syllables is recognised as one N-gram, of two letters in length. Thus, a complete word may be recognised as two two-grams (one for each syllable), or three three-grams (one for each letter in the first syllable and a second for the letter in the second syllable), or four four-grams (one for each letter in the first syllable, the second syllable and a third for the letter in the third syllable).
